In a bid to increase the productivity and income of paddy rice farmers from $2 US Dollars to $4 per day, the Niger State Rice Investment Consortium through the Competitive African Rice Initiative (CARI), will provide agricultural financial aid and information to the beneficiary farmers.
The consultant managing the consortium, Godfrey Ajayi, made this known, during the flag-off ceremony of this year’s dry season farming in Bida Local Government Area of the state.
He commented that it was the intention of the consortium under the CARI initiative to improve the livelihood of rice farmers with a view to increasing domestic rice supply.
“About 50, 000 farmers are targeted in Nigeria for the pilot scheme from Kogi and Niger States. In Niger state, we began with 5000 small-holder farmers.” He disclosed.
Leader of the Rice Value Chain, Professor Olumuyiwa Osiname, charged the consortium to encourage rain-fed rice farming, adding that areas that experienced drought should be complimented with irrigation.
