Dr. Oduntain said Nigeria currently consumes 70 pieces of egg per person annually, while countries like China records 370 pieces of egg per person annually while South Africa records 134 pieces of egg consumption per person annually.
“An egg a day for 50 per cent of Nigerian population will produce daily economic value of N1.7 billion. Annual revenue from egg sales will be N620 billion. If per capita consumption of eggs increases to 100 eggs per person per year, then annual revenue would be N340 billion,” the PAN President stressed.
Dr. Oduntan further said that the egg industry in Nigeria produces about 1 billion eggs per annum valued at approximately N220 billion.
He lamented that despite growing poultry industry there is approximately 1.7 million malnourished Nigerian children which is 10 per cent of the global malnourished population, a situation he said could be halted with egg-a-day policy.
“Aside from breast milk, eggs have the highest protein biological value. Eggs are the best follow up to breast milk in children as it contains mix of essential amino acids”, he added.
He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to include an egg per Nigerian child in the school feeding program.
He also advocated for the initiation of eggs and egg products as part of the feeding program of the Nigerian Military and various peacekeeping operations all over the world.
In Kano, our correspondent reports that the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has urged authorities concerned to include an egg a day per Nigerian child in the school feeding program of General Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as a measure of eliminating malnutrition among over one million acutely malnourished Nigerian children.
Speaking at the event making the World Egg Day, Kano State PAN patron Muhammadu Aminu Adamu stated that it will help in eliminating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition as it is believed to be a unique item filled with the best proteins, vitamins and mineral.
He added that the Nigerian current per capita consumption is about 65 eggs according to him the Egg industry produces about 1 billion eggs per annum valued at approximately N220 billion.
Mallam Adamu emphasizes that an egg per day for 50% of the Nigerian population will produce a daily economic value of N1.7 billion and annual revenue from Egg sales will be N620, 000,000.
Reacting to PAN’s demand Special Adviser to Kano state Governor on education Dr. Bakari Ado Muktar said the state government has review ed its feeding provisions with an increase in monetary allocation , especially in the boarding schools.
